If in doubt, call us, to get your gas installations checked to ensure your vessel is up to date with all current safety regulations and your family is safe on the water .

Gas is not something that you can play around with.
There are strict marine gas regulations in New Zealand and any gas work aboard a vessel must be completed by a licensed installer and needs to comply with the AS/NZS 5601.2:2013 standard.

Our friendly Gasfitters are always happy to take your call and answer any query you may have regarding gas safety on your vessel.

If you are selling a boat you have an obligation for your vessel to be gas compliant.

Don’t cut corners, call an expert.
At Optimum, we are approved registered contractors to all marinas in the Auckland region.  We also hold specialist ship repairers’ insurance needed to work on all types of maritime vessels in New Zealand.

Have confidence while out on the water with an up-to-date Code of Compliance Certificate from Optimum Marine & RV Gasfitting.

Unfortunately, gas installations on New Zealand boats often lag far behind existing gas regulations. As a certified gas fitter, not a month goes by where we don’t see something that has the possibilty of being life threatening on a vessel.

Common gas safety issues

The most concerning non-compliant issues we come across relating to a gas installation in the marine industry are:

  • Incorrect hose types
Brittle, worn and incorrect pipework is very commonly used. Gas hoses need to be replaced every 10 years.
  • Califonts installed inside of boats and yachts
Most people think a water heater/califont simply needs a flue to the outside to be compliant. This is a common misconception.
  • Corroded and out of date LPG cylinders
Gas bottles come with a manufacturer date stamp and need to be re-tested every 10 years in NZ.
  • LPG cylinders stored inside the vessel
LPG cylinders that are not in a dedicated sealed gas locker with correct venting are not compliant.
  • Appliances with no flame failure devices
This can cause the uncontrolled release of gas and lead to a large gas build-up.
  • Gas cylinders not secured correctly
Gas bottles should always be secured upright and never be stored on their side. This includes spare gas bottles.
  • Poor ventilation
For the safety of all on board, good ventilation is absolutely necessary for your gas appliances to operate.

Marine Gas Certifications

Have peace of mind with bi-annual gas safety checks. We will inspect your vessel to ensure all gas work complies with current New Zealand gas standards.

An audit usually takes 30 minutes and if the vessel complies we can issue certification on the spot. If anything needs changing in order for your boat or yacht to meet current marine gas regulations, we will discuss this with you.

I would like to express my gratitude to Optimum Marine and RV Gasfitting, after smelling gas in our motorhome, Robb kindly agreed to travel up to Wellsford after numerous attempts of trying other local gasfitters but none seemed interested in working on motorhomes. His knowledge and fault finding skills in this line of work was top notch, he had us back up and running with a fully compliant and leak free system in no time.

I would like to thank Robb from Optimum Marine Gasfitting for the superb workmanship and service he provided upgrading our gas system in our 70ft yacht before going offshore. His attention to detail was amazing and provided us with quality appliances that look sure to last the distance. We now feel comfortable with our gas system. Would recommend to any boat owner!
