Unfortunately, gas installations on New Zealand boats often lag far behind existing gas regulations. As a certified gas fitter, not a month goes by where we don’t see something that has the possibilty of being life threatening on a vessel.
Common gas safety issues
The most concerning non-compliant issues we come across relating to a gas installation in the marine industry are:
- Incorrect hose types
Brittle, worn and incorrect pipework is very commonly used. Gas hoses need to be replaced every 10 years. - Califonts installed inside of boats and yachts
Most people think a water heater/califont simply needs a flue to the outside to be compliant. This is a common misconception. - Corroded and out of date LPG cylinders
Gas bottles come with a manufacturer date stamp and need to be re-tested every 10 years in NZ.
- LPG cylinders stored inside the vessel
LPG cylinders that are not in a dedicated sealed gas locker with correct venting are not compliant. - Appliances with no flame failure devices
This can cause the uncontrolled release of gas and lead to a large gas build-up.
- Gas cylinders not secured correctly
Gas bottles should always be secured upright and never be stored on their side. This includes spare gas bottles. - Poor ventilation
For the safety of all on board, good ventilation is absolutely necessary for your gas appliances to operate.
Marine Gas Certifications
Have peace of mind with bi-annual gas safety checks. We will inspect your vessel to ensure all gas work complies with current New Zealand gas standards.
An audit usually takes 30 minutes and if the vessel complies we can issue certification on the spot. If anything needs changing in order for your boat or yacht to meet current marine gas regulations, we will discuss this with you.
